Devastating Earthquake on the New Madrid Fault?
May 26, 2004 -- Award-winning author and lecturer, Sam Penny, will discuss his novel, Memphis 7.9, on The Curious Mind, an Internet radio program hosted by Leisure Talk Radio Network.
Memphis 7.9 weaves fact and fiction into a riveting tale of what will happen during a massive earthquake on the New Madrid Fault, an event that will cause thousands of deaths, create millions of displaced persons as well as present major implications to the U.S. economy.
According to Penny, "My intent was to use the best scientific and engineering analysis available to determine exactly what the effects of a great earthquake will be, and then tell a first-class story that illustrates those effects while entertaining my reading audience. I call the result Reality Fiction."
Working with scientific data and generating extensive computer models, Penny's story focuses on how some of the citizens of Memphis, TN have prepared for a major earthquake on the New Madrid Fault Zone, just 45 miles west, and what happens to the Mississippi River Valley during the first six hours immediately following a great earthquake of magnitude 7.9. A series of three major earthquakes of even greater magnitude tore apart the same region in 1811 and 1812.
Memphis 7.9 won Honorable Mention for Best Science Fiction Novel in the 2004 Darrell Awards and is part of a four-part project, The 7.9 Scenario.(www.the79scenario.com) His next book, Broken River, is scheduled for publication in late summer.
Leisure Talk Radio Network is an Internet radio station based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Curious Mind's host, Jana Oliver, is an award-winning author and co-owner of MageSpell Press.
Oliver explains, "I really want an opportunity to examine intriguing topics, not just the usual talk show fodder. The Curious Mind allows me the freedom to explore in new directions and present subjects that my listeners might not otherwise hear."
